These medical devices are primarily intended for procedures involving drainage of the thoracic cavity to remove fluids that are generally pathological or pathogenic. They are useful for eliminating any accumulation of biological material that mechanically prevents lung expansion and the correct physiological functioning of the lungs.

The use of drainage is required, for example, after thoracic surgery procedures or in clinical conditions that impair the normal activity of the thoracic cavity.
Depending on the model, the devices may function through a water-seal valve or be equipped with a non-return valve on the patient tube (spontaneous gravity drainage mechanism).
